Frequently Asked Questions

1. General
1.1. What is IDmelon?

IDmelon is a passwordless authentication service which provides a convenient and secure way for you to log into your websites and applications. You can use your iPhone or Android smartphone as a FIDO2 hardware security key, so that you no longer need to type a password to log into your laptop/desktop and online services such as Microsoft, Office 365, GitHub, or any other FIDO2 supported platforms.
In fact, you can register your smartphone as a security key to the online service, authenticate your identity by using one of the preferably local authentication mechanisms available on the smartphone such as biometrics instead of traditional username/password logins and, therefore, keep your laptop/desktop and information safe in a convenient and secure way.
However, if you are not willing to use your smartphone or your workplace has restricted the use of smartphones, you can use an IDmelon Fob or an IDmelon Key for passwordless logins.

1.2. How secure is IDmelon?

Biometric authentication on smartphones that is becoming increasingly a common reliable and convenient way of unlocking a device cannot be extended through modern FIDO2 standards beyond smaphones. But, IDmelon has successfully enabled smartphones to be certified FIDO2 security keys.

Besides, embedded secure elements protect information from becoming compromised.

1.3. How is IDmelon different from security keys?

IDmelon eliminates the burden of carrying an extra physical object, i.e. a security key, around all the time which is cumbersome, unnatural and at a serious risk of being lost, stolen, damaged or left behind. Users are not forced to pair their smartphones with PCs via Bluetooth, so don’t worry if Bluetooth on your PC isn’t working properly. In fact, IDmelon offers a great user experience by enabling a ubiquitous smartphone which is rarely out of sight to be a FIDO2 certified security key.

IDmelon offers Security Key as a Service which cuts the costs of hardware security key purchase, distribution, replacement, and delivery.

And most importantly, the IDmelon Admin Panel allows enterprises to monitor and control their employees’ security access.

1.4. How is IDmelon different from other smartphone-based authentication solutions?

In addition to token management, IDmelon allows users to share a PC by a single tap of their smartphones on an IDmelon Reader to go login without having to pair their smartphones with the PC via Bluetooth.

2. If you are using an IDmelon Reader…
2.1. What is an IDmelon Reader?

It is a BLE reader that connects to a USB port on a PC to enable a user to log into the PC, websites, and applications without having to type a password. IDmelon Reader allows a user to authenticate their identity by simply tapping their smartphone on the Reader in order to go login.

2.2. Who is IDmelon Reader for?

Everyone can use IDmelon Reader, but it is specially designed for shared PC environments in which multiple users can use a single PC without compromising security. It is ideal for deskless workers, shift workers, and people who work in retail, education, manufacturing, or healthcare.

2.3. Can I use IDmelon Reader as a FIDO2 token without a smartphone?

Unlike passwordless authentication solutions based on a security key/token which is at serious risk of being lost, stolen, or left behind, our smartphone-based passwordless authentication method allows you to use your ubiquitous smartphone as a FIDO2 hardware security key.

In fact, you no longer need to carry an extra physical object or the burden around. Instead, to go login, you receive a popup notification on your smartphone which you can tap if and only if your smartphone is unlocked with one of the local authentication mechanisms available on the smartphone such as biometrics.

2.4. Do I have to buy an IDmelon Reader?

No. An individual who does not share their laptop/desktop does not need an IDmelon Reader and therefore can log into the computer and websites by simply approving a notification on their smartphone.

However, in shared PC environments, where multiple users log into the same computer, an IDmelon Reader connects to a USB port on the PC to enable multiple users to go passwordless after a single tap with their smartphones on the Reader and then log out of the system/app at the end of each session so that another user can log into the same PC or software.

But either way, an end user no longer carries an extra physical object, i. e. a security key, and can use their ubiquitous smartphone as a FIDO2 certified hardware security key.

2.5. Can a PC be shared, so that multiple users will be able to use their own smartphones to unlock the PC?

Yes. IDmelon Reader allows an unlimited number of users to use their smartphones as an external security key to log into windows, websites, and apps on the same PC in a convenient and secure way.

2.6. How many users can use the same IDmelon Reader?

An unlimited number of users can use the same IDmelon Reader.

2.7. Do users have to pair their smartphones with PCs via Bluetooth?

No. Due to frequent complaints about Blutooth problems in Windows 10, we eliminated the need to the Bluetooth connection on Windows.

All you need to do to turn on the Blutooth on your smartphone, tap your smartphone on the Reader, click on the popup notification on your smartphone and go login.

2.8. How is IDmelon Reader different from FIDO2 security keys?

With IDmelon, you no longer carry an extra physical object, i.e. a security key, around all the time. And in addition to unlimited storage capacity for credentials, credentials can be both managed and audited.

It also helps enterprises reduce deployment time and costs significantly, since there no longer exist the need for HR for security key purchase, distribution, replacement, and delivery.
